Global News: Chinese ship went to intercept a US Navy destroyer in the Taiwan Strait
A Chinese warship at high speed approached the American destroyer USS Chung-Hoon at a distance of less than 150 m in the Taiwan Strait. The relevant footage was shared by the Global News channel on June 3.
The incident occurred during a joint US-Canadian mission in the Taiwan Strait. According to one of the military, the Chinese Navy ship notified the American Chung-Hoon about the excessive rapprochement, to which the US asked the Chinese side to stay away from the ship. However, eventually the United States had to change course and slow down to avoid a collision.
It is clarified that the American and Canadian ships sailed together for about a week in the South China Sea before entering the Taiwan Strait. According to the TV channel, the Chinese military monitored the vessels and even sailed to a safe distance. At the same time, as indicated in the material, the Chinese military radioed the ships that they were entering the territory of China, but the Canadian military is confident that the exercises took place in international waters.
The "interaction" of the US and Chinese militaries is not the first time. So, on May 26, an American RC-135 military reconnaissance aircraft approached the area where the exercises of the Shandong aircraft carrier group took place in the South China Sea, which is why the Chinese aviation organized surveillance and monitoring of the movement of an air scout.
On June 2, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that recently the Pentagon has been recording "dangerous maneuvers" carried out by Chinese military aircraft against American aircraft and their allies in international airspace. According to Austin, the United States seeks to preserve the right of all countries to fly freely, sail and perform operations where international law permits.
On May 21, US President Joe Biden expressed hope for an early warming in relations between Washington and Beijing. He stressed that the United States and China should have an open hotline.
In turn, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that China is not sure that the United States really wants to establish contacts with it, since the White House continues to impose sanctions, including technological ones, against Beijing.
Relations between the US and China have sharply deteriorated after the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in August last year. Beijing considers the island its territory, so it considers visiting the island by officials of other countries as support for Taiwan's independence.
