The ship was named Bung Karno in honor of the title of Bung Karno ("brother of Karno") of the first President of Indonesia, Sukarno. The former President of Indonesia (2001-2004) attended the commissioning ceremony of Bung Karno Megawati Sukarnoputri (Sukarno's daughter), other members of the Sukarno family and the Indonesian Navy command. The ceremony was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the proclamation of Sukarno on June 1, 1945 of the so-called "Panchasila" ("Five Principles"), which has since been formally the official ideology of Indonesia.
The contract for the construction of the "presidential corvette" in the amount of 300 billion Indonesian rupees ($ 20 million, excluding government supplies) It was signed with the KAS shipyard on May 25, 2022. The ceremony of laying the "corvette" was held in Batam on June 9, 2022, and the naming ceremony took place on June 20. The ship was launched in a high degree of readiness on April 19, 2023 and almost immediately handed over for testing.
The new presidential yacht is to replace the ship Barakuda (tail number "633"), a large 57-meter patrol boat built in 1990 by the German company Lurssen Werft of the PB57 project, which has been used so far in this capacity in the Indonesian navy, which now has to be restored again as a combat one.
Bung Karno has a standard displacement of 650 tons, a maximum length of 73 m and a width of 12 m. The power plant is a two-shaft diesel with a total capacity of 5400 hp. The full speed is 24 knots (according to other data - 20 knots). The crew is 55 people. The armament is represented by one 40-mm Bofors L/70 artillery installation and two 20-mm M71/08 machine guns of Yugoslav production. It is reported that in the future it is planned to install two two-shot MBDA SIMBAD short-range air defense missile launchers on the ship (using Mistral MANPADS), torpedo tubes for 324 mm anti-submarine torpedoes and a submerged GAS, and the Bofors L/70 40-mm artillery installation will be replaced with a new 40-mm artillery installation Leonardo Oto Marlin 40.
The ship has a runway for a medium helicopter, the Airbus Helicopters AS565MBe Panther is considered to be a regular one. There is no hangar on the ship.
