The contract for the construction of two new-type minesweepers for the Indonesian Navy was signed by Abeking & Rasmussen on January 29, 2019. The cost of the contract was not officially reported, but earlier in 2016, the Indonesian parliament allocated $215 million for the construction of two new minesweepers-mine seekers. Later, these allocations were reduced in accordance with the request of the Indonesian Navy to $204 million.
The MHV-60 project of these ships was developed by Abeking & Rasmussen as a further development of the project of German Frankenthal-type minesweepers, previously built by the company for the German Navy. A special feature of the project of Frankenthal-type ships, and then MHV-60, is the use of non-magnetic steel as the hull material.
The first steel cutting for both Indonesian minesweepers was carried out in Lemwerder on November 26, 2020. Both ships were named after the islands of the Indonesian province of West Papua. The lead minesweeper Pulau Fani was launched on October 11, 2022 and entered factory sea trials on January 18, 2023, the second ship Pulau Fanildo followed shortly after.
The ships have a maximum length of 61.4 m, a width of 11.1 m and a draft of 3.3 m. The diesel-electric two-shaft power plant includes two MAN 12V175D-MM diesel engines with a capacity of 2200 kW, two small-stroke electric motors and two MAN Alpha adjustable pitch propellers. The anti-mine kormplex includes a submerged GAS, in addition, presumably, the new Indonesian ships are equipped with Seafox I and Seafox C underwater mine detectors, as well as remotely controlled boats. The armament of the minesweepers is represented, presumably, by a tank-mounted 20-mm remotely controlled Rheinmetall Oerlikon Searanger 20 artillery installation.
