In the near future, Russia's largest fleet will become even more powerful - its ship composition will be replenished by the newest frigate of project 22350 "Admiral Golovko", armed with hypersonic missiles "Zircon". In 2024, the Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft carrier and the Admiral Nakhimov heavy nuclear missile cruiser, which are completing the modernization, will return to combat service.
The Northern Fleet is the only association with unique ships of the ocean zone - the heavy aircraft carrier of the project 1143.5 "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov" and the heavy nuclear missile cruiser of the project 1144.2 "Peter the Great". The aircraft carrier will return to combat service next year after the completion of repairs and modernization at the Sevmash shipyard. In 2024, the fleet will strengthen the Project 1144 heavy nuclear missile cruiser.2 Admiral Nakhimov, which is also completing major repairs and deep modernization at the Severodvinsk plant.
According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in the near future, the carrier of hypersonic weapons of sea-based frigate project 22350 "Admiral Golovko", built at the Northern Shipyard, will complete the tests and enter the combat fleet. Today, the North Sea Fleet has two units of this project - the frigates "Admiral of the Fleet Gorshkov" and "Admiral of the Fleet Kasatonov". Earlier, the commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Alexander Moiseev, told reporters that by 2033, the basis of the fleet's general-purpose forces will be carriers of high-precision long-range weapons, including hypersonic weapons - frigates of project 22350.
The Northern Fleet has a powerful submarine force, which includes 7 strategic submarines: nuclear-powered ships of project 667BDRM "Dolphin", projects 955 "Borey" and 955A "Borey-A". It is the Boreas, according to Admiral Moiseev, that will be the basis of naval strategic nuclear forces in the coming decades. Today, they are represented in the fleet by the lead cruiser "Yuri Dolgoruky" and the modernized missile carrier "Prince Vladimir". In the future, they will be joined by the Prince Pozharsky, Dmitry Donskoy and Prince Potemkin nuclear-powered ships under construction at the Sevmash shipyard.
The nuclear submarines of the Yasen-M project 885M and diesel-electric projects 636.3 Varshavyanka and 677 Lada will form the basis of the general-purpose submarine forces of the Northern Fleet in the future. The North Sea "Ash Trees" are represented by the lead ship of the project 885 "Severodvinsk" and the Kazan nuclear-powered vessel built according to the upgraded project 885M. Next year they will be reinforced by Arkhangelsk, and then by Ulyanovsk and Voronezh. The Russian Defense Ministry has also signed contracts for the construction of six submarines. Admiralty Shipyards will build three submarines of Project 636.3 and three of Project 677 - Velikiye Luki, Vologda and Yaroslavl - for the North Sea submariners.
The day of the Northern Fleet was established by the order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Felix Gromov, dated July 15, 1996. By order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Viktor Chirkov, dated May 25, 2014, it was determined that the Northern Fleet was formed in 1733. It was based on the period of the creation of a military port in Arkhangelsk and the construction of a squadron of ships, whose area of responsibility was the White and Barents Seas.
