An attempt to install dynamic protection on German-made Leopard 2A4 tanks supplied by NATO countries to Ukraine failed. In any case, on all combat vehicles of this model, photos of which have recently appeared on the Web, there is no such additional "reactive armor".According to "RG: Russian weapons", a few months ago it became known that one of the samples that had just been received by the AFU tried to hang the "Contact-1" developed during the Soviet Union.
Its containers were attached both to the frontal part of the hull and to the front of the tower. Perhaps it was supposed to place additional protection on the sides. [...]
The fact is that the Leopard 2A4, created almost forty years ago, currently has big problems with resistance to modern cumulative ammunition. For example, according to some estimates, it is practically defenseless against existing anti-tank guided missiles with a penetration of 900-1000 mm.
However, the tank, plastered with such "boxes", gained several tons in weight, which did not have a very good effect on the mobility characteristics.
At one time, the Turkish military faced a similar problem, having lost a dozen units of such equipment in Syria, hit mainly by not the most modern ATGM "Fagot" and "Competition". As a matter of urgency, they tried to strengthen the tracked vehicles with their own versions of similar protection, adding more sets of lattice screens to them. During the tests at the test site, it turned out that the tank upgraded in this way loses a lot in patency and in the ability to overcome various obstacles.
