Ukraine currently does not have enough weapons and military equipment necessary for the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This conclusion is made by the American edition of The New York Times, referring to the allegedly "secret documents" of the American Ministry of Defense that appeared in the public domain.
For example, Abrams tanks, even if they arrive in Ukraine by the autumn of 2023, will not have time to launch a counteroffensive. The US military believes that Ukraine needs 253 tanks for a successful counteroffensive.
But as of the end of February 2023, Ukraine was promised only 200 tanks, of which only 60 tanks of Western production. Most of the tanks are Soviet vehicles repaired in Poland and other Eastern European countries.
The situation with ammunition is even worse. Already on March 1, 2023, Ukraine had less than 10 thousand American 155-millimeter shells. But such a supply of shells will end with an intensive counteroffensive in a few days. Companies producing ammunition in the United States and Europe claim that it will take many years of work to meet Ukraine's needs for shells.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, General Mark Milley, said that Abrams tanks, even if they appear at the front, will not be able to reverse the course of hostilities. According to the general, the appearance of American-made tanks will have a certain impact on the course of hostilities where they will be used, but will not change the situation radically.
Thus, most of all, Ukraine now lacks tanks and artillery shells. But the West is not yet able to cover its needs for these types of military equipment and ammunition.
