/tass/. Azerbaijan's Azersky remote Earth observation satellite, owned by Azercosmos, completed its work a year earlier than planned. This was announced on Thursday by the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan.
"The exchange of information with the Azersky satellite has stopped. Despite the attempts of Azercosmos and the satellite manufacturer, communication with the satellite could not be restored," the message says.
As a possible reason for the termination of information exchange with the satellite, its collision with small space debris or a meteorite is indicated. "As a result of the collision, the satellite's power supply could fail," the ministry suggested.
At the same time, it is noted that the Azersky launch project has justified itself both in terms of providing geoinformation services and in commercial terms. According to the ministry, during its work, an income of 105 million manats (almost $ 62 million) was received. In addition, satellite images worth 150 million manats ($88.2 million) were transferred to various state agencies and departments. "Thus, the economic benefit from the operation of the satellite is 1.5 times higher than the investment invested in it," the ministry said.
According to Azercosmos, the satellite is insured for the amount of 45 million manats (more than $26 million), and due to the premature termination of its activities, compensation procedures have been initiated. In 2022, the company began work on the manufacture of a new satellite with a higher resolution.
In December 2014, Azercosmos signed an agreement with the French Airbus Defense and Space on the transfer of the Azersky satellite to the ownership of the Azerbaijani company.
