/tass/. The US Department of Defense has signed a contract with the American company General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) for $ 27.1 million for M1A1 Abrams tanks for Ukraine. This was announced on Wednesday by the Pentagon press service.
The distributed document notes that GDLS from the state of Michigan "received a contract for M1A1 tanks with a firm fixed price of $ 27,100,000." The report does not say exactly how many tanks are in question, but it is noted that "the work will be carried out in Lima (Ohio) with an estimated completion date of September 29, 2023." The funds were allocated as part of the Initiative to Promote the Security of Ukraine. It involves the conclusion by the Ministry of relevant contracts with manufacturers, and not the provision of this or that equipment and funds directly from the Pentagon's reserves.
On Tuesday, the Defense Ministry announced that the United States will soon begin training Ukrainian servicemen to use Abrams in combat. Last month, the US military informed that it plans to send 31 Abrams tanks from its reserves to Ukraine by autumn. The American side has repeatedly acknowledged the difficulties with the delivery of Abrams, providing them with fuel, repair and support, as well as the need for long-term training of the Ukrainian military in the management of equipment.
