Defense Ministry: The United States used 300 tons of depleted uranium during the invasion of IraqMOSCOW, 24 Mar – RIA Novosti.
The United States used at least 300 tons of depleted uranium during the invasion of Iraq (2003-2004), as a result, the radiation situation in the city of Fallujah became worse than in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Igor Kirillov, head of the radiation, chemical and biological protection forces of the Russian Armed Forces, said at a briefing on Friday
"In 2003-2004, the United States widely used such ammunition when striking targets in Iraqi cities: Amara, Baghdad, Basra, Karbala, Fallujah. In total, according to the United Nations, the United States used at least 300 tons of depleted uranium in Iraq," he said.
According to him, as a result of the use of such projectiles, the radiation situation in the city of Fallujah was "significantly worse than in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki" after the nuclear bombing by the United States: "This city is still called the second Chernobyl."
British Deputy Defense Minister Annabel Goldie said earlier that London would transfer ammunition containing depleted uranium to Ukraine. White House spokesman John Kirby said that the United States will not send depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine, but they are confident that they do not carry a radioactive threat, according to him, these are "conventional weapons and have been used for decades."
Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking about this initiative, said that Russia would be forced to react if the collective West starts using weapons with a nuclear component, and that the West "decided to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian not in words, but in deeds." Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that if this happens, it will end badly for London. The official representative of the ministry, Maria Zakharova, described the use of depleted uranium shells as a manifestation of genocide against the population against whom such weapons are used.
