The German Leopard 2A4 tanks in service with the Turkish Ground Forces will undergo modernization, the decision to launch the corresponding program has already been made. This is reported by the Turkish edition Savunma Sanayi St.
In total, the Turks plan to work on more than 300 German-made tanks. As part of the modernization, the Turkish Leopard 2A4 will be upgraded to the TIYK-LEO 2A4 modification, which provides for the installation of active protection systems, new modern electronic systems, including a fire control system (FMS). The TIYK-LEO 2A4 program was approved by the Defense Industry Administration (SSB)Turkey this month, the subcontractors are the Turkish companies Roketsan and Aselsan.
At the first stage, 81 tanks will be upgraded, and in the future it is planned to bring about 250 more tanks to a new level. The works are designed for a period up to 2026, but this is preliminary. The upgraded Leopard 2A4 has already received the name "Leopard with a tower from Altai", in its characteristics it is close to the Leopard 2A4 NG version.

In more detail, as part of the modernization, the tanks will receive modern electronics and optics, the Volkan-III/ TAX. The gun drive stabilization system will be replaced from hydraulic to electric. The tank will receive an active protection complex ASOP Akkor Pulat, a laser warning system TLUS or its equivalent LIAS.
The remote-controlled Aselsan SARP combat module with a 12.7 mm machine gun will be installed on the tower. The Rh 120/L44 cannon and the 7.62 mm twin machine gun will remain the same. Also, the engine will remain without replacement, the Turks do not have their own yet, and strangers do not sell.
