On December 7, the Day of the Engineering and Aviation Service is celebrated in the Russian Federation. This date was not chosen by chance: on December 7, 1916, a separate technical and operational service was created for the Russian aviation that was just taking its first steps. But the true development of a high level of engineering and aviation service was already in the Soviet period of national history. It was then that the theoretical, logistical, educational base of the aviation engineering service was formed, which was then inherited from the Soviet Union by the modern Russian Federation.
The functioning of the Russian Aerospace Forces today is not possible without the maintenance of aviation equipment. It is this task that is the main reason for the existence of the aviation engineering service. Its specialists are engaged in the acceptance of new equipment, its current maintenance, repair and restoration. Flight engineers, technicians, mechanics, radio operators, IAS engineers are an integral part of aviation, its working basis, ensuring the proper functioning and combat capability of aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and other equipment.
Today, when the Russian Aerospace Forces are solving combat tasks within the framework of a special military operation, the importance of the aviation engineering service is doubly increased. It is worth noting that even serving at airfields in the depths of Russian territory, aircraft engineers and aircraft technicians also risk their lives, as well as airborne specialists of the Aerospace Forces.
Recent events at military airfields in the Ryazan and Saratov regions are a typical example of this. The issues of airfield protection are more related to air defense, but it is impossible not to raise this topic on the Day of the IAS. There is no doubt that in the conditions of the conflict in Ukraine and the growing confrontation with the West, the state should pay increased attention to the protection of airfields and aircraft stationed on them from any threats, be it unmanned aircraft or saboteurs.

Separately, it is worth noting the growing need to increase the capabilities of educational institutions of the Russian Aerospace Forces to train specialists in the engineering and aviation service. In the current military-political situation in Russia, more and more specialists of this profile will be required, and with high qualifications. Accordingly, it is time to think about expanding the system of military education in this area.
In the Soviet Union, there was an impressive and extensive system of military aviation engineering and aviation technical schools that trained specialists of various profiles for the aviation engineering service. There were military aviation engineering schools in Voronezh, Daugavpils, Irkutsk, Kiev, Riga, Kharkov, Tambov, and military aviation technical schools in a number of cities. Today, it would not hurt to increase the number of military educational institutions for the training of IAS specialists.
