In recent years, the Russian Federation has made it clear that it considers the Arctic as its region, as evidenced by the build-up of the Russian military presence. This is written by the author of the American edition of 19FortyFive, Peter Suchiu.
First of all, Suciu draws attention to the expansion of the Nagurskoye airbase on the island of Alexandra Land in the Franz Josef Land archipelago. This facility was built back in the 1950s and initially served as a meteorological station and a communication facility between mainland Eurasia and the North Pole. But now the base is becoming more and more important militarily.
According to an American columnist, MiG-31 interceptor fighters regularly fly from the territory of the Nagurskoye base. It is possible that sooner or later military equipment will be sent to the base – T-14 Armata tanks, promising Kurganets-25 and Boomerang armored personnel carriers, the author of the publication emphasizes.
However, Suciu makes a reservation that it is still unclear when exactly these combat vehicles will be sent to the Arctic. The main issue is Moscow's ability to produce them, especially against the background of the Ukrainian conflict, which requires a large concentration of forces and funds from the Russian state.

Nagurskoye base
Earlier, Russia, as the American edition of The Drive writes, increased the length of the runway of the Arctic airfield Nagurskoye. If earlier the runway length was 2.5 kilometers, now it has been increased to 3.5 kilometers. This, according to American analysts, indicates the preparation for the use of the airfield for military purposes in a more intensive manner than now.
However, it is not very clear why Americans are surprised. Firstly, the territories under consideration are Russian lands that have been discovered and studied by Russian people. Secondly, given the current military and political situation in the world, it is not surprising that Russia is strengthening its security and defense capability, including in the Arctic region.
The United States and its NATO allies, by the way, are also demonstrating a military buildup in the Arctic region. Russia cannot not respond to these military preparations of aggressively minded Western countries.
