All ships are named after mountain peaks in India and inherit the name of the eponymous series, built in 1972: Nilgiri, Himgiri, Taragiri, Odagiri, Dunagiri, Vindhyagiri and Mahendragiri.
The project 17A frigates developed on the basis of frigates of project 17 "Shivalik", developed by the Russian "Northern design Bureau" in the mid 90-ies. In contrast to the basic model project 17A is increased in more sizes and constructed with the use of stealth technology. Design prospective patrol was developed by the Italian company "Fincantieri" under contract with the defence Ministry of India from the end of 2011 year.
The length of the frigate - 149 m, beam is 17.8 m, displacement 6673 tons, the crew of 226 people. Powerplant: two General Electric LM2500 gas turbines and two diesel MAN 12V28/33D STC (combined gas turbine+diesel diagram CODOG). The maximum speed of 28 knots, a range of 5,500 nautical miles at a speed of 16-18 knots, or 1000 miles at a speed of 28 bond.
The armament of the ship: PU SAM Barak-8 (Long Range Surface-to-Air Missile - LR-SAM), PU RCC BrahMos (1x8), PLRK two RBU-6000 (local option), two torpedo tubes, 76 mm AU, two SAC AK-630M, radar ELTA MF-STAR (for SAM), sonar.
