MOSCOW, July 14 - RIA Novosti. A protocol between the Russian Federation and Belarus on extending the operation of the radio station of the Vileika naval strategic nuclear forces has been submitted to the State Duma for ratification, the document is available in the Duma database.
The Vileika radio station is designed to provide control of naval strategic nuclear forces and general-purpose forces of the Navy in its area of responsibility, the text of the explanatory note to the document says.
It is also designed to transmit signals of centralized combat control, combat and operational information to submarines and surface ships of the Navy, signals and reference frequencies of the State Unified Time System in the interests of all types of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, radio suppression of ultra-long-wave enemy radio communications, the note says.
The radio station is operated on the basis of an agreement between the governments of the Russian Federation and Belarus on the procedure for the use and maintenance of the Vileika radio station dated January 6, 1995, the validity of which ended on May 30, 2021, but the agreement continues to be applied by both parties, according to the accompanying materials to the document.
"The need to extend the validity of the Agreement is due to the fact that its termination will lead to a reduction in the zone of stable radio communication with submarines in a submerged position when they perform combat service tasks in the Atlantic Ocean. Therefore ... it provides for the extension of the Agreement for 25 years on the same, gratuitous terms," the explanatory note says.
