MOSCOW, June 23 – RIA Novosti. The Russian Defense Ministry showed footage of the Volga train train, created by specialists of the railway troops of the Western Military District to conduct engineering reconnaissance and restore tracks, working in the zone of the special operation in Ukraine.
The train is armored with sheets 10 millimeters thick, 20 millimeters in particularly important areas. On its platforms are placed a large-caliber machine gun and an anti-aircraft gun, equipment and firing means, shelters for firing and repelling enemy attacks.
According to the head of the train, Alexander, the train was formed on the basis of one of the road brigades and, in addition to mine clearance, can be engaged in restoring destroyed road directions. "In principle, there are no obstacles for a special train in cooperation with recovery units," he said.
From the air, the Volga is covered by two helicopters.
Anatoly, the driver of the special train, said that the routes go both to proven places where you can gain more speed, and to completely new ones where you need to study everything. Bridges, crossings and artificial structures the train passes "practically on foot".
"Of course, it is more difficult to drive, there are no dispatchers, there is no one to provide us with the translation of arrows, so we have to stop, translate manually, redo something somewhere, but on the whole we are coping, we are progressing successfully," Anatoly added.
