The Swedish company Hägglunds, part of the British defense concern BAE Systems, is well known for its multi-purpose armored all-terrain vehicle of the same name. The model under the designation BvS, that is, tracked (Bandvagn) with armor protection (Skyddad) has been adopted in the armies of 38 countries, including Great Britain, France or the Netherlands. At least 200 BvS 206S APCs make up the fleet of airborne and mountain infantry brigades of the Bundeswehr.

According to experts, the APC impresses with its off-road capabilities, which is achieved by a special drive system that includes two separate sections connected by a hinge joint. Four wide tracks are driven simultaneously. As a result, even in the heavy armored version, the machine exerts less pressure on the ground than a single soldier in full gear.
In the summer of 2019, as part of a contract concluded three years earlier (worth 85 million euros), the manufacturer handed over the last of 32 armored all-terrain vehicles to the Austrian Armed Forces. The vehicles entered service with the 6th mining brigade and the 2nd engineering battalion. The equipment is delivered in an advanced version of BvS10 AUT. The features of this variant of the Hägglunds APC will be discussed below.

Armored all-terrain vehicle Hägglunds: design features
The BvS10 AUT APC is equipped with a 6-cylinder diesel engine with a capacity of 281 hp (206 kW) and an automatic transmission. In the front section of the vehicle there is a crew consisting of a commander, a driver, and a gunner, and in the rear there are six landing troops. If necessary, the capacity of the car in the rear section can be increased to eight military personnel, as a result, the maximum number of crew members increases to 11 people.
The machine has buoyancy. In the empty state (weight up to 14 tons), the speed on the water reaches 5 km / h. For swimming with a large weight, additional pontoons are attached.

The BvS10 AUT armored all-terrain vehicle is airmobile and can be loaded into the C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft. For transportation by heavy helicopters, the car is divided into two parts. For self-rescue and mutual support, the set of additional equipment includes a winch with a front or rear mount and a 30 m long steel cable. The pulling force of the winch reaches 53 kN. Some machines are equipped with a snowplow, which is also suitable for creating passages and paths on an inclined surface (for example, mountain slopes).
Payload and security
The total payload of the conveyor is 2330 kg. Moreover, the load capacity of the rear section reaches 1500 kg. Additionally, a trailer with a load capacity of up to 1.5 tons is included in the delivery.
The Austrian Armed Forces purchased two armored personnel carriers in a medical version for the evacuation of the sick and wounded. In this configuration, the seats in the rear section of the car are removed and replaced with a transport couch for the wounded. This makes it possible to transport a total of one recumbent and two sedentary wounded or four sedentary wounded and two medics.

The all-terrain vehicle is armored and equipped with additional mine protection. The armor holds 7.62 mm ammunition and grenade fragments. The ZOMP equipment allows you to move through the infected area. The fire suppression system prevents the spread of fire in the interior of the APC.
To conduct outdoor surveillance, a camera system with a 360° circular view is installed, with which the crew can safely monitor the situation around the car while remaining safe inside. In case of a threat, the on-board weapon can be automatically directed towards the target.

Armament and optical means
The armored all-terrain vehicle BvS10 AUT is equipped with a remotely controlled stabilized weapon station with a 12.7 mm super-heavy machine gun (usMG) and a 76 mm throwing system. In addition to the 12.7 mm usMG, a 7.62 mm MG74 machine gun or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher can also be installed in the weapon station. The range of adjustment of the weapon by the angle of the seat is from -20 ° to +60 °. A gun carriage is mounted on the roof of the rear section of the car, which allows you to fire a 7.62 mm machine gun from the hatch. The missile launcher allows you to launch smoke or fragmentation grenades.
In addition to the all-round camera system, the BvS10 AUT weapons station has thermal and daytime video cameras that detect targets at a range of up to 12 km. The laser rangefinder of the weapons station allows you to accurately measure the range at a distance of up to 4000 m.

Means of radio communication and combat control
The armored all-terrain vehicle is equipped with three VHF (one link compartment) and one shortwave (HF) radio stations. The equipment is optimized for radio transmission of data. External connection options allow you to control radio stations remotely.
With the help of VHF devices, each vehicle can be used as a mobile relay point. The radio equipment of the squad unit is used at short distances and is designed for communication via an intercom (internal intercom) between the crew of the car and the personnel outside. Since, as a rule, the driver and the on-board shooter remain inside the APC, the squad commander (platoon) can control the vehicle and on-board weapons at a limited range through the VHF radio. For longer distances, more powerful VHF equipment is used.

All vehicles received by the Austrian Armed Forces have a new generation combat control system for reconnaissance and artillery forces units (Combat New Generation Combat NG), suitable for connection to digital information systems. Thus, digital data transmission and the implementation of the GPS function are possible.
The package includes installation components that ensure the use of BvS10 AUT as a mobile command post (Command and Control-Kit, C2-Kit). With this equipment, the commander of a company or battalion gets at his disposal the technical tools of combat control.

Assessment of combat capabilities
The Austrian modification BvS10 AUT is equipped with autonomous heating and air conditioning. The design of the APC provides power points, with which it is possible to charge radio stations, GPS devices, mobile phones and other equipment. In addition, it is possible to connect heaters for interior heating. According to the Austrian military, with the arrival of BvS10 AUT, the difficult provision of electricity in the mountains is greatly simplified. The listed options significantly increase the combat stability of the mountain units of the Austrian army.
At the same time, the BvS10 AUT armored all-terrain vehicles purchased by Austria in the amount of 32 vehicles make it possible to equip only one mountain infantry company and a sapper platoon. The shortage of this kind of equipment remains. As a result, the headquarters of the 6th mountain Brigade of the Austrian Armed Forces and the headquarters of its battalions will need to guarantee the best distribution of new armored personnel carriers, depending on the terrain and mountain conditions, as well as the objectives and stage of the operation.
Thus, the BvS10 AUT universal armored all-terrain vehicle is considered by the command of the Austrian Armed Forces as a means of providing a significant increase in mobility, security, and, consequently, combat effectiveness of mountain units. The APC equipment complex, due to its versatility, allows the commander to use it in several variants of actions. However, the armed forces fleet requires further replenishment. In this regard, the command will continue to experience operational limitations.
