The Russian Defense Ministry, during a special military operation in Ukraine, uses Su-25SM3 attack aircraft with protection from portable anti-aircraft missile systems of foreign production.
According to sources familiar with the situation, the Russian command sent upgraded Su-25SM3 attack aircraft to Ukraine, equipped with an on-board defense complex "Vitebsk", capable of protecting the aircraft from foreign MANPADS missiles. The complex is located in suspended containers on the suspension nodes of the aircraft. Attack aircraft with "Vitebsk" are used mainly in the southern direction and in the Donbas.

The Su-25SM3 is a further modification of the Su-25SM attack aircraft. A digital display was installed on the upgraded vehicles, which displays the ground and air situation, a new fire control system and GLONASS satellite navigation were installed. The combat effectiveness of the machine has improved threefold compared to previous modifications. The aircraft is capable of hitting ground targets from a considerable distance without making visual contact with the target, but only by coordinates.
The aviation complex of individual protection "Vitebsk" performs the role of protecting aircraft and helicopters from guided missiles and man-portable anti-aircraft missile systems by setting optical and electronic interference. To date, the troops are supplied with a deeply modernized version of the complex based on the results of its use in Syria.
