TSAMTO, May 11. The British Ministry of Defense announced the signing of contracts with BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce worth more than 2 billion pounds, providing for the beginning of the third stage of the Dreadnought SSB construction program.
As stated, the third stage (DP3) is the most important in the Dreadnought program. In 2021 alone, this project supported about 13,500 jobs in the north-west of England and another 16,300 in the rest of the UK.
The agreement is the first tranche within the planned total amount of almost 10 billion pounds for the implementation of the entire delivery phase.
This stage of the program provides that the construction of the first (of the four planned for delivery) Dreadnought submarine at BAE Systems will be completed, and the SSB will be put to sea trials. The collected information will be taken into account during the assembly and testing of the next submarines of the series.
As reported by TSAMTO, the British Ministry of Defense approved the implementation of the design phase of the nuclear submarine with ballistic missiles "Saxessor" ("Successor") in May 2011.
The new SSBMS are designed to deter potential threats to the national security of the UK. They will replace four Vanguard-class submarines in service. The total cost of the project for the construction, operation and support of new SSBPS is estimated at 31 billion pounds.
In May 2012, the first contracts for the implementation of the project were signed with BAE Systems Maritime-Submarines, Babcock and Rolls-Royce, which merged into a consortium. Subsequently, the Ministry of Defense of Great Britain concluded a number of contracts with the consortium members.
On October 5, 2016, the first steel cutting ceremony was held at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness for the construction of the head of the series. It is planned that the lead submarine will enter service with the British Navy in the early 2030s. The length of the submarine will be 153.6 m, displacement - 17200 tons. 12 Trident-2 ballistic missiles of the D-5 version and 533-mm torpedo tubes will be placed on board the submarine.
