Ex-commander-in-chief of the Black Sea Fleet: they wanted to give the cruiser "Moscow" to the Naval Forces of Ukraine

As a result of a fire, ammunition detonated on the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the missile cruiser "Moscow". The ship was seriously damaged, the crew was evacuated, and the source of the fire was localized, the Russian Defense Ministry reported. "Newspaper.Ru" figured out what the cruiser was armed with, and what its history was.

The Guards missile cruiser "Moscow" was built at the 61 Kommunar Shipyard in Nikolaev and launched on July 27, 1979. On December 13, 1982, he joined the Black Sea Fleet of the USSR Navy under the name "Glory".

The cruiser is designed to strike at large enemy surface ships, provides combat stability of ship anti-submarine groups. It also carries out air defense of remote formations and provides fire support to the landing.

The ship has repeatedly made visits to ports of different states. In particular, in 1989, he took part in ensuring a working meeting of the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Mikhail Gorbachev with US President George H.W. Bush at the La Valletta raid.

"The cruiser has always been the beauty and pride of the Black Sea Fleet, it is the flagship that all commanders and sailors loved. We need to figure out what really happened there now. But the threat of losing it was real in the early 1990s. The cruiser during the repair in Ukraine could repeat the fate of the "Ukraine" - a cruiser that could not be completed or sold abroad in time. There were, of course, such nuances as a lack of funding, as a result of which the cruiser could be disassembled for spare parts or given to the Ukrainian Navy. Unfortunately, this did not happen," he told the newspaper.En" ex-commander of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov.

Retired 1st rank captain Nikolai Pavlenko, who served on the cruiser in the early 2000s, believes that the former mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov, played a special role in saving the ship.

"This cruiser almost became Ukrainian, but Luzhkov helped. In March 1991, it was put on overhaul and modernization in Nikolaev. Due to debts to shipbuilders, the ship was planned to be dismantled in order to complete the same type of cruiser "Ukraine". On the initiative of the Mayor of the Russian capital Yuri Luzhkov, the Moscow government took over the "Glory", funding was allocated. As a result, the cruiser was taken to Sevastopol in 1999, renamed "Moscow" and rejoined the fleet," he told the newspaper.En" Pavlenko.

In 2016, there was talk of decommissioning the cruiser, but the Navy command defended this ship and in 2019, after three years of repairs, it went to sea. "Moscow" has updated the main power plant, replaced diesel generators and radio systems. It was assumed that the cruiser would be able to remain in service until 2040.

The cruiser "Moskva" is also called the "killer of aircraft carriers", and its main striking power is the anti-ship cruise missiles "Vulkan". They were supposed to be replaced with Onyx and Kalibr missiles.

Air defense is represented by the S-300F Fort air defense system, 64 missiles can hit any air targets, including airplanes, drones, cruise missiles and guided bombs at a distance of up to 75 kilometers. The short-range air defense of the ship is provided by the Osa-M air defense system.

From artillery, the cruiser is equipped with a two-gun AK-130 (130-mm) installation with a range of up to 22 km. Of the anti-submarine weapons, the Moskva is equipped with 533-mm torpedo tubes and RBU-600 Smerch-2 rocket-bomb launchers.

Many experts, including Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov, believe that Moscow needs a more serious modernization.

"It is necessary to strengthen the main caliber, anti-aircraft missile weapons and gas turbine installations, according to the type of how the Marshal Ustinov cruiser was modernized," he told the Newspaper.En" Admiral Komoyedov

After the upgrade, the Marshal Ustinov was armed with Basalt launchers with six-ton cruise missiles with a flight speed of 3077 km/h, RBU-6000 jet depth charges, and anti-aircraft missile weapons were updated. New radar stations have been installed - the three-coordinate long-range detection radar "Podberezovik" and the station "Fregat-M2M" optimized for detecting low-flying targets with phased antenna arrays.
