The American AN/FPS-117 radar did not notice the Chinese Y-12 aircraft
The air defense system from the United States, located on Dongyin Island, did not notice a small Chinese Y-12 civilian transport aircraft approaching Taiwan, writes the South China Morning Post.
The newspaper notes that the air defense system includes anti-aircraft missiles and AN/FPS-117 radar station imported from the United States of America. "The inability of the Taiwanese military to detect a civilian aircraft from mainland China near an island held by Taipei earlier this month revealed a "serious weakness" in its radar system," the newspaper writes, admitting that it may be a human error.
The South China Morning Post reminds that Dongyin is located 16 kilometers from the mainland, and the AN/FPS-117 radar is able to recognize targets only in the range from 120 to 470 kilometers.
In August 2021, Izvestia, citing sources in the Ministry of Defense, reported that the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) received a 104J6 meter-range radar capable of "seeing" stealth aircraft, in particular, the American F-35 Lightning II, for experimental duty.
