Having studied the situation on the global market of electric vehicles, the specialists of the analytical company Canalys came to the conclusion that 6.5 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in 2021, which is 109% more than in 2020.
Analysts took into account fully rechargeable electric vehicles and cars with hybrid power plants connected to the power grid. It is noteworthy that the entire global automotive market grew by only 4% in 2021. Sales of electric vehicles in 2021 accounted for 9% of all passenger car sales.
According to experts, demand remained high, and many more electric vehicles could have been sold, but a chronic shortage of components prevented it.
Mainland China and European countries accounted for 85% of all electric vehicle sales in the world. 3.2 million units were sold in China, which is 15% of all new cars sold in this country during the year. 2.3 million electric vehicles were sold in Europe, accounting for 19% of new car sales.
For comparison, in the United States, the share of electric vehicles was only 4% of new cars sold in 2021. During the year, about 535,000 electric vehicles were sold here.
Half of all electric vehicles sold in the world were sold to buyers in mainland China, and the best-selling model here remains the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV. At the same time, Tesla leads the global electric car market with a share of 14%. Volkswagen Group ranks second with a market share of 12%. The detailed distribution of the market is shown in the illustration.
