MOSCOW, Feb 14 - RIA Novosti. Russia is successfully increasing the potential and capabilities of its armed forces, including the nuclear component, said Viktor Bondarev, chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security.
"Russia is very successfully increasing the potential and capabilities of its armed forces, including the nuclear component. By 2024, the share of modern weapons and military special equipment will be almost 80 percent," he said at parliamentary hearings in the Federation Council.
As for the nuclear triad, the share of modern weapons and military equipment there reached almost 90 percent last year, the senator noted.
Speaking about the international arms control system, Bondarev said that it is collapsing before our eyes.
"We have no illusions about a radical change in the strategy of the US geopolitical behavior regarding the detente of global tensions or at least serious progress in this direction. Today, the global arms control system is in a deep crisis," he said.
At the same time, the head of the committee stressed that Russia's policy in the field of nuclear deterrence is defensive in nature, the country has fulfilled and is fulfilling all its international obligations.
"Now, when serious issues in the field of economy, social sphere, countering the threat of a large-scale coronavirus pandemic are on the agenda, it is more important than ever to move away from the arms race and concentrate efforts on countering new, non-military challenges," Bondarev said.
