Kiev. February 13. INTERFAX-UKRAINE - On December 12, Ukrainian insurance companies received a notification from Lloyd's reinsurance broker (Great Britain) about the temporary withdrawal from coverage of all options for covering military risks in aviation insurance, both third-party liability insurance and aircraft CASCO.
"Yes, we received from one of Lloyd's brokers that from Monday all options for covering military risks in aviation insurance, both in third-party liability insurance and CASCO, are temporarily removed from coverage," Anatoly Ivantsiv, director of EXPO Insurance, told Interfax-Ukraine.
At the same time, he noted that this applies only to military risks under liability contracts and CASCO insurance. All other risks remain covered, as before.
"If the aircraft is damaged as a result of military actions, the insurance company and reinsurers will not cover this loss, which was caused by military actions. If suddenly the plane is shot down and falls on a residential building, a city, a factory, etc. and causes damage to third parties, then the risk of coverage as a result of military operations is also removed from the coverage of liability to third parties," the director of EXPO Insurance said.
According to him, the lessors, knowing that such risks will not be covered, will naturally ask the airlines to which they have leased the aircraft to take them outside the dangerous territory. The same companies that own their own fleet can continue flying at their own risk.
"I think that in order to stabilize the situation, the state and the Ministry of Finance need to create a temporary special fund on which to fix a certain amount of money and give airlines a state guarantee to cover military risks in mandatory aviation insurance, and then everything will calm down," Ivantsiv said.
According to the head of the Insurance Business Association Vyacheslav Chernyakhovsky, there is no question of closing the airspace over Ukraine for flights, this decision is made by the State Aviation Service and Ukraerukh. The only question is whether airlines will risk flying without war risk coverage if their insurance companies do not give them such coverage or suspend existing ones.
