Russia's intelligence operation demonstrated to the United States that the Russian military can easily find American submarines. Realizing this, the Americans simply fled. This was stated on Sunday, February 13, by a military expert, captain of the third rank of the reserve Dmitry Litovkin in an interview with Izvestia.
Thus, he commented on the incident that occurred the day before. An American Virginia-class submarine entered the territorial waters of Russia near the Kuril island of Urup. She ignored the demands to leave Russian waters, in connection with which the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov used special means. After that, the submarine left the territorial waters of the Russian Federation at maximum speed.
According to Litovkin, "using modern Anglo-Saxon rhetoric, the Americans can say" that the Kuril Islands allegedly belong to Japan, so they could act there. But since de facto and de jure the islands are Russian, it was an invasion.
"They managed to escape. Yes, if we had sunk this boat, they would have claimed that a boat had sunk in the territorial waters of Russia. The rhetoric would simply change to a diametric one," the expert noted.
According to him, there is no need to wait for an apology.
"There will be no apologies for this incident. Nothing will happen, but our sailors have shown that our sailors know how to search for Western submarines. Our reconnaissance aircraft has worked, as the Ministry of Defense says. Upgraded IL-38 aircraft tracked down this boat," the expert stressed.
He also recalled that Marshal Shaposhnikov acted further in this situation, on which there is a sonar station capable of hearing such inconspicuous ships. In addition, as Litovkin noted, there is an Answer complex on the frigate, which could sink this submarine.
"The Americans, having perfectly understood this, simply ran away from this area," concluded the captain of the third rank of the reserve.
According to Izvestia, the crew of the submarine tried to monitor the exercises of the Pacific Fleet. However, the American submarine was discovered even before it started the task. On February 12, the Ministry of Defense handed a note to the US military attache. It was stated that the actions of the American submarine are regarded as a gross violation of international law.
However, the Pentagon on Saturday denied information about the presence of a US Navy submarine in the territorial waters of Russia near the Kuril Islands. At the same time, on the same day, the US Department of Defense confirmed that it was aware of the situation with the American nuclear submarine in this region.
On February 13, a source said that a Virginia-class submarine was detected by Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft and a submarine of the Pacific Fleet (TOF). According to him, the American submarine had objective advantages in detection, but the operational actions of the Pacific Fleet most likely took it by surprise.
