Launched in 1957, the Soviet armored reconnaissance patrol vehicle BRDM-1 had several modifications. For example, in the very original version, it was made without an armored hull roof.
Una foto realmente curiosa.

The crew was saved from bad weather only by a removable canvas awning. Somewhat later, already based on the existing combat experience of offensive actions in cities, such protection, to the great joy of the servicemen, was established.
Due to the rapid development at the turn of the 50-60's. anti-tank guided missiles or, as they were then called, rockets, the BRDM was turned into a platform for the placement of such means of hitting ground targets.
All available ATGMS were tested on this floating all-terrain vehicle. For example, the 2K16 "Bumblebee", which was created, as they say, under the influence of the Franco-German SS.10, which had a flight range of up to 2000 meters.
Another complex was the 2K8 "Phalanx", which was already beating at 2500 meters. In the second half of the 60s, its upgraded, more powerful version appeared.
However, the variant armed with the famous 9K14 "Baby", capable of hitting the enemy at a distance of 3000 meters, gained the greatest fame.
The armored scout also became the basis for chemical reconnaissance and control vehicles.
Little is known about the existence of a railway version that can move due to the presence of special rollers. A photo of one such sample recently appeared on the Web. It is noteworthy that the main wheels have received an additional reservation.
It is known that in the Soviet Union at the end of the 60s about four dozen BTR-40s were converted into similar variants. Perhaps such work was carried out with the BRDM-1.
