The joint statement of Russia and China on military biological security is a very balanced and reasoned position of the largest nuclear states, Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Education (RAO), Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences Gennady Onishchenko told RIA Novosti.
The Russian Federation and China, in a joint statement published on the Kremlin's website, called on the United States to abandon plans to deploy medium- and shorter-range missiles in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe, properly inform about its military-biological activities, accelerate the elimination of its chemical weapons stockpiles, and said they would strengthen coordination between the two countries on these issues.
"This document, the joint statement of our President and the People's Republic of China is the political, balanced and very reasoned position of the two largest states. Let me remind you that these are nuclear States. This is a very powerful statement," Onishchenko said.
He stressed that the significance of this statement can be compared with the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing, especially considering that it happens on the same day.
According to Onishchenko, the heads of the Russian Federation and China are calling on Americans to publish reports on their activities in the field of military biological security for a reason. "For example, in Kazakhstan - I have objective data - specialists from Germany work, but not from a civilian institute, but from a military one. And they work, as the Americans claim, in a civilian laboratory," he explained.
At the international level, the two largest states express concern about the military-biological activities of the United States and for the first time urge Americans to follow the rules of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) again and make reports on the work being done, since the BTWC rules presuppose the publication of scientific research that is being conducted in the country, Onishchenko noted.
"The KBTO Institute should work, and it is not working now, because Americans officially left it back in 2001… This is for me a very serious call for the return of the United States. I think this is a huge and very serious statement," Onishchenko stressed.
