Sea trials of the fifth Kalvari-class submarine of the Indian Navy have begun

TSAMTO, February 3. The Ministry of Defense of India announced the sea trials of the fifth (out of six ordered by the Indian Navy) non-nuclear submarine of the Scorpen class (Kalvari), which began on February 1.

In the near future, the submarine (factory number 11879) will undergo intensive tests at sea. The transfer of the NAPL to the Indian Navy is scheduled for 2022, After it is put into service, it will receive the name "Vagir".

As reported by TSAMTO, the initial contracts with a total value of 187.98 billion. The Government of India signed with French and Indian companies within the framework of the "Project 75" in October 2005, providing for the construction of six Scorpen-class NAPS. The construction of submarines is carried out in accordance with the technology transfer agreement by Mazagon Dock Limited (now Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited) with the participation of the French Naval Group (formerly DCNS). The new submarines will replace the obsolete Sindukush (Kilo) and Shishumar (Type-209/1500) class submarines.

In February 2010, along with the revision of the submarine delivery schedule, the project cost was increased to 235.62 billion. rupees ($3.6 billion). The delivery schedule of the Scorpen submarines has been revised several times. The initial plan provided for the delivery of the first submarine in 2012, the remaining submarines were planned to be transferred at intervals of one year until 2017. At the moment, the deadline for the transfer of the sixth NPL has been postponed to the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.

The construction of the main NPL of the series began in December 2006. The Indian Navy "Kalvari" was transferred on September 21 and entered the fleet on December 14, 2017 with a delay of almost 6 years. The second submarine of the series, Khanderi, was adopted by the Indian Navy in September 2019, the third, Karanj, in March 2021, and the fourth, Vela– in November 2021.

The fifth submarine, the Vagir, was launched in November 2020. The sixth NAPL "Vagsheer" (Vagsheer) is also under construction.
