NASA plans to flood the ISS at Nemo Point in the Pacific Ocean in 2031
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) intends to continue operating the International Space Station (ISS) until 2030. This is reported by CNN .
After that, the station is planned to be flooded at the Nemo Point — the most remote place in the ocean from land. According to the TV channel, this area, known as the spaceship cemetery, is located 4828 kilometers from the east coast of New Zealand and 3218 kilometers north of Antarctica. It is estimated that since 1971, the United States, Russia, Japan and a number of European countries have dropped more than 263 pieces of space debris into the area.
As follows from the NASA report, the decommissioning of the object will take place in January 2031. The document notes that the ISS will perform maneuvers that will ensure "safe entry into the atmosphere."
In December 2021, the head of NASA, Bill Nelson, said about the decision of US President Joe Biden to extend the life of the ISS until 2030.
