Defence24: Russian Buyan-M ships are helpless on the high seas
Small missile ships of the 21631 Buyan-M project, equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles, do not have a powerful air defense system, therefore they are defenseless in the open sea before a possible enemy strike, Polish military observer Maximilian Dura tells on the Defence24 portal.
Thus, the expert commented on the recent entry into the sea of ships of the Baltic Fleet of Russia. In his opinion, these actions of the Russian side do not pose a threat to navigation in the Baltic Sea.
So, Dura noted that the ships of the project 21631 "Buyan-M" can operate effectively only while in Baltiysk under the cover of a land-based air defense system. "At sea, these corvettes are practically helpless against an air attack," the author wrote.
The specialist recalled that after Poland acquired Naval Strike Missile (NSM) missiles, such actions of Russian surface ships not equipped with a powerful air defense system lost much meaning. "That is why the actions of surface groups currently being created should be considered typical propaganda activities," Dura is sure.
In his opinion, in the joint Russian-Chinese exercises "Peaceful Sea — 2022", held recently in the Arabian Sea, Moscow, unlike Beijing, demonstrated ships using Cold War technologies. Russian Russians undoubtedly had an advantage in terms of the number of barrels and antennas, but in fact these exercises were a demonstration of how technologically the Russian fleet lagged behind the Chinese," the author wrote.
In February 2019, military expert Dmitry Boltenkov said that the NSM anti-ship missiles produced by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace, which are in service with the naval missile unit of the Polish Navy, are capable of hitting objects of the Baltic Fleet.
Earlier in the same month of the same year, Alexey Leonkov, a military expert of the Arsenal of the Fatherland magazine, reported that the NSM were not able to interfere with Russian routes in the Baltic.
