The Volkhov submarine launched a Kalibr cruise missile at a ground target in the waters of the Sea of Japan. This was announced on Thursday, January 20, according to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
"Today, in the waters of the Sea of Japan, the newest diesel-electric submarine Volkhov of the Pacific Fleet launched a Kalibr cruise missile at a ground target from an underwater position," the ministry said.
Before performing the combat exercise, the submariners made a secret exit to the designated area. It is noted that at the estimated time, the missile hit a coastal target on the tactical field of Surkum in the Khabarovsk Territory.
"The firing range was more than 1000 km. The execution of missile firing was provided by ships and vessels of the Pacific Fleet, aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles of the naval aviation of the Pacific Fleet," the ministry said.
The Volkhov submarine is the second in a series of six ships being built by Admiralty Shipyards JSC for the Russian Pacific Fleet. The submarine was laid down in July 2017 and launched in December 2019.
The new submarine has passed state and sea trials, confirming all the design characteristics laid down: maneuverability, stealth and equipment with high-precision weapons
In 2020, the submarine became part of the Russian Navy.
On December 21, the newest diesel submarine Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky of the Pacific Fleet launched a Kalibr cruise missile, a salvo was fired from an underwater position in the waters of the Sea of Japan.
It was clarified that the crew of the submarine, when performing a training task, conducted a set of trainings with the development of an algorithm of actions during rocket firing with high-precision weapons. Before the launch, the submariners conducted a tactical maneuver of secretly entering the shooting area.
As reported in November, by 2024, six multipurpose submarines of Project 636.3 will serve in Vladivostok. These ships will increase the capabilities of the Russian fleet in the region: the boats of the series are considered one of the most silent in the world and carry an impressive arsenal on board, including Kalibr cruise missiles, as well as supersonic Onyx.
