TASS: an unmanned torpedo boat is being developed in Russia
In the interests of the Russian Navy, an unmanned boat is being created that can detect the enemy in autonomous mode and use torpedo weapons on it, TASS reports, citing a source in the military-industrial complex.
"Currently, an unmanned boat is being developed on an initiative basis, the main purpose of which is to search for and destroy enemy submarines in autonomous mode. After detecting an enemy boat, the unmanned system will independently identify the target and make a decision to launch a torpedo," the source said.
It is expected that this system, capable of operating both in automatic mode and through the control of a small crew, will be used in the far sea zone and in the Arctic latitudes.
"With the help of several torpedo-carrying robots, it will be possible, without involving the main anti-submarine forces, to quickly deploy a temporary anti-submarine line in the area of combat patrol of a grouping of Navy ships or to strengthen defense at fleet bases," the source said.
The interlocutor of the agency clarified that the boat with a length of 14 meters will reach a speed of more than 35 knots, move with sea waves up to 6 points and work without refueling for up to 3 days. The main ammunition of the boat will consist of two universal electric torpedoes with a caliber of 533 millimeters.
In April 2020, The Drive edition wrote that the Russian upgraded universal deep-sea homing torpedo (UGST) "Physicist" is one of the best in the world.
