Defense Blog: Ukrainian military will receive former Afghan helicopters as part of US assistance
The Armed Forces of Ukraine may receive new helicopters in the spring as part of US military assistance. The American side intends to transfer the Mi-17V5 and Mi-8MTV helicopters, which belonged to the Afghan Air Force (Air Force). This is reported by the Defense Blog.
The publication notes that it is planned to transfer five Mi-17V5 and one Mi-8MTV helicopters to the Ukrainian side. The first batch of cars will be sent in the spring.
The publication emphasizes that about 20 helicopters of the Mi-8/Mi-17 family of the Afghan Air Force are located outside the country. The condition of these machines is unknown.
In December 2021, Flight Global magazine released the World Air Forces 2022 handbook. In the world ranking of military helicopters, Russian multi-purpose vehicles of the Mi-8/Mi-17 family became the second.
In November, CNN reported that the administration of US President Joe Biden is considering the possibility of transferring Afghan helicopters to Ukraine. American officials insist on the transfer of equipment that was originally purchased for the Afghan military.
