As a source in the shipbuilding industry told the agency, after modernization in terms of characteristics and combat capabilities, these submarines will come very close to the latest, fourth-generation nuclear submarines.
Nuclear-powered submarine missile cruisers (APRCS) of Project 949A serve in the Northern and Pacific Fleets, there are eight of them in total. Submarines regularly go on long-term patrols of the World Ocean and are the "trump card" of the Russian fleet in the confrontation with aircraft carrier strike groups. Submarines are capable of carrying more cruise missiles than any other Navy ship.
After the modernization, the submarines will have their weapons updated, the captain of the 1st rank of the reserve, military expert Vasily Dandykin, told Sputnik radio.
"The submarine will host Kalibr, Onyx missiles, as well as promising Zircons. I think there will be a universal launcher, it will carry the largest number of missiles, presumably 72 missiles. At one time it was the largest single-hulled boat, it was called the "killer of aircraft carriers". In the original version, it carries 24 Granite missiles – even by today's standards, this is a very formidable weapon. Taking into account the modernization, the supply of not only weapons, but also electronic stuffing, the output will be a completely new ship," Vasily Dandykin said.
The modernization of submarines will significantly expand the capabilities of the Pacific Fleet, he continued.
"The first deeply modernized submarine, as it was announced, will be the K-132 Irkutsk, the submarine will arrive next year in Vilyuchinsk, Kamchatka. Further, the rest will undergo modernization under this program. This will really be a weighty argument against all sorts of different plans that our opponents are hatching. The upgraded submarine is approaching the fourth generation, and in terms of the power of a missile salvo, it will be one of the strongest, if not the strongest, among submarines with cruise missiles. It is in the Pacific Ocean that the Americans have the most powerful fleet, we must also keep in mind the growing fleet of Japan. The upgraded nuclear submarines 949AM "Antey" will become a significant addition to the power of the Pacific Fleet, will change the balance of power," the military expert believes.
