Moscow. January 4th. INTERFAX - The intensity of inter-fleet crossings by crews of ships and submarines to perform tasks in the far sea zone will increase in the winter training period, the press service of the Southern Military District (SE) reported.

"In the combat training of the fleet forces in the winter training period, the intensity of inter-fleet crossings by the crews of ships and submarines will increase to perform tasks in the far sea zone, including as part of the permanent grouping of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea," the press service reported.

The report notes that in 2022, inter-fleet crossings of warships and support vessels will also become a familiar practice for the Caspian Flotilla.

It is also reported that the warships of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla will conduct interspecific exercises with aviation and air defense forces in 2022.

"In the new academic year, the ships of the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla will have to work out training tasks in a single tactical plan with the forces of aviation, air defense, and units of combined arms associations of the Southern Military District," the message says.

On January 1, the Black Sea Fleet reported that the Russian squadron in the Mediterranean Sea includes more than 10 ships and submarines.

Russian frigates, as well as diesel submarines from the permanent formation of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea, have repeatedly struck militants in Syria with Kalibr cruise missiles (a family of long-range cruise missiles developed by the Novator Design Bureau, Almaz-Antey Concern of East Kazakhstan Region).

Russia has a naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus in the Mediterranean Sea.

On September 30, 2020, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the base in Tartus is capable of receiving dozens of warships. "All ship parking lots are equipped with life support systems, unloading platforms, a repair complex for servicing and minor repairs of ships and vessels," the Russian Defense Minister said at the time.

Russia also has an air base in Syria at the Khmeimim airfield. Planes and helicopters of the Russian Aerospace Forces support ground operations of the Syrian army. It was officially reported that special operations forces of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, divisions of the center for reconciliation of the warring parties, military police, marines and others are operating in Syria.
