Small rocket and artillery ships, as well as base minesweepers arrived in the city
ROSTOV-ON-DON, December 27. /tass/. More than 20 ships of the Caspian Flotilla have been relocated in Dagestan from Makhachkala to a new military base in Kaspiysk, where a port has been built to accommodate the flotilla's forces and assets. This was reported to journalists on Monday in the press service of the Southern Military District.
The press service clarified that small missile and artillery ships, as well as base minesweepers, arrived in Kaspiysk.
"As part of the relocation of the main forces of the Caspian Flotilla, more than 20 ships arrived at the port of the city of Kaspiysk. <...> The port was built to accommodate the forces and assets of the flotilla as part of the plan to upgrade the infrastructure of the Caspian Flotilla base," the report says.
The engineering and technical staff of the brigades and ship equipment for the maintenance of ships and their preparation for going to sea were also delivered to the base point. The press service added that on the eve of the New Year holidays, the combat readiness of the crews will be checked, as well as an inspection of the educational and material technical base.
On December 21, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the completion of the construction of six mooring berths in Kaspiysk for the flotilla's warships. The infrastructure of the port includes new hydraulic structures (northern and southern protective jetties with berths) and coastal facilities for parking and servicing ships, boats and support vessels, including new and promising models. The northern and southern jetties with a length of 3 kilometers will protect more than 700 thousand square meters of the inner harbor from waves and sediments. Work on the northern pier has already been completed. To deepen the harbor, military builders chose about 2 million cubic meters of bottom sand, which is also used for planning the territory of the military camp.
The creation of a new military base in Kaspiysk began after Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu decided in 2018 to relocate the Caspian Flotilla from Astrakhan, which is less convenient in hydrological terms.
