During the experiments, it is planned to delay communication and return the crew to Earth without rescuers
MOSCOW, December 21. /tass/. The International Space Station will become a simulator for preparing a flight to Mars, during the experiments it is planned to delay communication and return the crew to Earth without rescuers. This was announced to journalists on Tuesday by Oleg Kotov, Deputy Director for Science at the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"We have all sorts of interesting projects within ISS for Mars (ISS for Mars - approx. TASS). [They] have already started in terms of scenario development. <...> It is even planned that the crew will spend a day or two near the lander after returning to Earth, that is, rescuers will not approach it. The equipment will be delivered there that they allegedly just landed on the surface of the planet, the Moon or Mars does not matter, in order to work out the issues of activity, activity and generally assess the efficiency, how many tasks they can perform," said Kotov.
In addition, issues of autonomy will be worked out on the ISS: a communication delay of up to five minutes is planned at the station to see how much the interaction between the crew and the flight control center on Earth is changing, as well as how capable the crew is to work autonomously.
"The ISS will be a kind of simulator for a flight to Mars," Kotov stressed.
