Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces Karakaev: the first regiment "Sarmatov" will take up duty by the end of 2022
The first regiment of the newest Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles "Sarmat" will take up combat duty at the end of 2022. The commander of the Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) told about this on the air of the Zvezda TV channel Sergey Karakaev, RIA Novosti reports.
He clarified that the task was set to put the first regiment in the Uzhur rocket Division in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Now work is underway there to prepare the infrastructure for missiles, and, the Colonel-General noted, the task will be completed.
Karakayev also said that today work is underway to prepare for the flight tests of the Sarmat.
In August, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that flight tests of the Sarmat missile would begin in 2021 and be completed in 2022. After that, the first regiment equipped with Sarmat missiles will enter service with the Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN). The promising strategic missile system of mine-based "Sarmat" is designed to replace the Soviet R-36M2 "Voevoda" missiles. The complex includes a multi-stage liquid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile. A special feature of the complex will be the ways of delivering warheads to the target, which will effectively bypass missile defense means.
Earlier it became known about plans to abandon Russia's use of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) "Topol-M" in the Strategic Missile Forces. By 2024, it is planned to decommission all missiles of this type. In April, a source in the military-industrial complex told TASS about the timing of the adoption of the promising Cedar missile. The new ICBM can replace mobile and stationary "Yars" in 2030.
