Elon Musk said that this project will also be relevant for flights to Mars
MOSCOW, December 14. /tass/. The American company SpaceX has launched a program to remove carbon dioxide from the Earth's atmosphere, the head of the company, American entrepreneur Elon Musk, said on Monday. The company plans to subsequently process carbon dioxide into rocket fuel.
Musk expressed the opinion that this project will also be relevant for flights to Mars. "Mars will also come in handy," he wrote on his Twitter page.
Earlier, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, reported that the concentration of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide) in the earth's atmosphere reached record levels in 2020, despite the decline in economic activity caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The organization noted a trend towards continued saturation of the atmosphere with gases in 2021. WMO Secretary General Petteri Taalas then recalled that "carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for centuries, and in the ocean for even longer."
In September 2017, at the International Astronautics Congress in Adelaide (Australia), SpaceX presented a project under the conditional name BFR (Big Falcon Rocket), which provides for the creation of a reusable rocket and space system combining a superheavy launch vehicle (at least 100 tons) and a spacecraft. In November 2018 Elon Musk said that the BFR system was named Starship. The company plans to use Starship in interplanetary missions, including flights to the Moon and Mars, this reusable spacecraft is designed for 100 people. As Musk stated in November, a test orbital flight of a prototype spacecraft could take place as early as January 2022.
