This creates prerequisites for the spread of nuclear technologies through the creation of a nuclear submarine fleet in Australia, Valery Gerasimov noted.
MOSCOW, December 9. /tass/. Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Valery Gerasimov called the creation of the AUKUS unit a destabilizing factor in the Asia-Pacific region (APR), as it creates prerequisites for the proliferation of nuclear technologies through the creation of a nuclear submarine fleet in Australia.
"The creation of blocs with a clear orientation against another state is a destabilizing factor. The AUKUS block (USA, UK and Australia) creates prerequisites for the proliferation of nuclear technologies. The creation of the nuclear submarine fleet of Australia can become a new stage in the struggle for regional dominance not only in the Asia-Pacific, but also in other regions of the world," Gerasimov said at a briefing before the military attaches of foreign states on Thursday. He noted that the Russian Defense Ministry is actively cooperating with partners in the Asia-Pacific region.
"This year we took part in meetings of the Defense Ministers of the ASEAN member states and dialogue partners (SMOA Plus), as well as in security events within the framework of the ASEAN Regional Forum," the Chief of the General Staff said.
At the same time, he stressed that the Russian Federation stands "for multilateral mechanisms to ensure security in the region, taking into account the interests of all states."
