This year, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation together with the Russian Geographical Society conducted several unique expeditions, State Secretary of the Military Department Nikolai Pankov said on Friday at the summing up of the joint work of the Armed Forces and the Russian Geographical Society.
"Continuing the glorious traditions, we jointly with the Russian Geographical Society organized 15 large-scale scientific expeditions in 2021, which allowed us to conduct unique research in the Arctic region of Russia, on the outer islands of the Gulf of Finland, on the Kuril Islands, natural and historical sites of the Republic of Tyva, as well as other scientific and exploratory events," Pankov said.
According to him, thematic exhibitions were organized at 276 venues in all regions of the country, which were visited by more than 1.5 million people. "More than 800 different events aimed at popularizing geographical and historical knowledge have been held, as well as more than 25 joint events with the Russian Geographical Society," the State Secretary of the military department stressed.

The Russian Geographical Society was founded in 1845 on the instructions of Emperor Nicholas I. In different years, the Society was led by representatives of the Russian Imperial House, scientists and statesmen. Since 2009, the president of the RGS is Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. Today, more than 22 thousand people in Russia and abroad are members of the Society. Regional branches of the RGS are open in all 85 subjects of the Russian Federation.
