Russian sappers arrived in Abkhazia to conduct mine clearance of the territory of the Sukhum International Airport, which was closed in 1993. After that, it is planned to begin work on the reconstruction of the air harbor.
According to the head of the press service of the Southern Military District, Colonel Vadim Astafyev, military engineers are stationed on the territory of the Russian military base in Abkhazia. After the preparatory measures, they will start clearing the airport territory of unexploded ordnance.
"All personnel have been trained in special training centers of the Russian Defense Ministry and have access to work with explosive objects," the colonel said.
By the way
In October, sappers of the Southern Military District cleared 350 hectares of agricultural land in Chechnya from explosive objects. Military engineers found and destroyed more than 700 munitions.
The personnel performed tasks in protective suits "Falcon". Robotic complexes "Uran-6" and sappers with specially trained mine-search dogs were used for mine clearance.
In total, since the beginning of 2012, more than 41 thousand mines, shells, grenades and other ammunition, as well as improvised explosive devices have been defused in Ingushetia and Chechnya.
