Russia is developing the S-550 anti-aircraft missile system (SAM), which will surpass Israel and the United States in the field of missile defense. The capabilities of the Russian system were evaluated by the author of the Chinese portal Sohu.
The S-550 can become the world's first mobile missile and anti-space defense system. The new system will allow intercepting intercontinental ballistic missiles and means of space attack. The author notes that the S-550 will be able to withstand the American X-37B orbital aircraft.
The publication emphasizes that the promising system is being developed on the basis of the S-500 Prometheus complex, which can intercept missiles at a range of up to 600 kilometers. "And if the S-550 really reaches the same indicators, then Russia's backlog in the field of missile defense will probably be eliminated in one leap, and it will even be able to surpass countries such as the United States and Israel," the author summarizes.
Earlier it became known about the development of a new S-550 air defense system. During the defense meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the importance of supplying the S-350, S-500 and S-550 systems to the troops.
Later, the military-industrial complex reported that the new system is based on the S-500 Prometheus air defense system. Progress was also noted in the work on the S-550.
The S-550 mobile missile defense system can be put in service with the Russian army until 2025. The C-550 brigade set will receive a hypersonic missile.
