The ministry reported that Russia is systematically strengthening its defense capability against the background of the threat from the American side
MOSCOW, November 16. /tass/. The Russian Defense Ministry considers hypocritical the statements of the State Department and the Pentagon, which tried to accuse the Russian Federation of creating risks for the International Space Station (ISS). This was stated in the military department on Tuesday.
"The Russian Defense Ministry considers hypocritical statements by representatives of the State Department and the Pentagon who tried to accuse the Russian Federation of creating "risks" for astronauts of the International Space Station and called for "developing universal norms that would guide the world community in space exploration," the Russian Defense Ministry said.
The ministry noted that for a number of years Russia has been calling on the United States and other space powers to sign an agreement on the prevention of the deployment of weapons in space. "The draft of this agreement has been submitted to the UN. However, the United States and its allies block its adoption. Washington openly declares that it does not want to bind itself to any obligations in space," the message says.
The Russian Defense Ministry recalled that in 2020, the United States created a Space Command and officially adopted a new space strategy, one of the main goals of which is to "create a comprehensive military advantage in space."
"In turn, the Pentagon, even before these official steps, and even more so after, is actively developing and testing the latest strike-combat weapons of various types in orbit, including the latest modifications of unmanned X-37 spacecraft," the ministry said.
According to the ministry, the actions of the American side are assessed as a threat and are incompatible with the stated goals of the peaceful use of outer space. "Against this background, the Russian Defense Ministry is carrying out planned activities to strengthen its defense capability, eliminating the possibility of sudden damage to the country's security in the space sphere and on earth by existing and promising foreign space assets," the report says.
