The Government of the Sudan has decided to resume work on the creation of a Russian base. The appearance of the object may affect shipping, as indicated in the material of the Ukrainian information and consulting agency Defense Express.
It is clarified that the resumption of the construction of a naval base in the city of Port Sudan was announced by the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Sudan Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. The base is intended for ships of the Russian Navy.
Defense Express noted with concern that the creation of a naval base in Sudan will allow the Russian Navy to influence shipping in the Suez Canal area.
The agreement on the establishment of a logistics point for the Navy was concluded in 2020. The document assumes the gratuitous transfer of land for the construction of the Russian Navy base. No more than four ships can be on the base at the same time, and the personnel of the base should not exceed 300 people.
In June, the Chief of Staff of the Sudanese Armed forces, Muhammad Usman al-Hussein, said about the desire to renegotiate the agreement with Russia. He stressed that the Russian side signed an agreement with the former government of Sudan.
Earlier, the Telegram channel "Military Observer" reported the appearance of Su-35S fighters at the Russian base in the Syrian city of Al-Qamishli. The report suggested that the appearance of multi-purpose fighters could be a signal to the Turkish side before the operation against Kurdish formations.
