The maneuvers took place against the backdrop of a difficult situation in Afghanistan, where the Taliban movement (a terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation) came to power.
The 201st military base stationed in Tajikistan is Russia's largest military facility outside of its borders (part of the Central Military District). It is located in two cities - Dushanbe and Bokhtar.
In August, the Central Military District announced the strengthening of the base in Tajikistan with new weapons - modern sniper rifles, portable air defense missile systems "Willow", Kalashnikov AK-12 assault rifles, flamethrowers and modern anti-tank missile systems "Kornet".
On July 21, it became known about the decision of the Russian military to strengthen the base in Tajikistan with 17 modern infantry fighting vehicles BMP-2.
In addition, according to the head of the armored vehicle service of the Central Military District Hanif Beglov, the Russian military base in Tajikistan will receive 30 modern tanks by the end of the year. They will replace the combat vehicles of earlier modifications of the tank battalion of the base.
The press service of the Central Military District clarified to Interfax that these will be T-72B3M tanks with improved combat characteristics.
Against the background of the Taliban movement coming to power in Afghanistan, Russia held several exercises near the Afghan border in Tajikistan in the summer and autumn. Several thousand servicemen, aviation, artillery and armored vehicles took part in the maneuvers.
