The DPRK confirmed that on October 19 it successfully tested a new submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), Yonhap news agency reports with reference to the Korean Central Telegraph Agency (KCNA).
The KCNA statement emphasizes that the new SLBM using such advanced control and guidance technologies as lateral maneuvers and "gliding jumps" will make a significant contribution to the development of North Korea's defense technologies, as well as the underwater combat capabilities of the country's navy.
It is noted that the first successful launch of a sea-based ballistic missile was made by the Defense Academy five years ago. Now she "has again achieved a successful launch from a new type of SLBM submarine." It is known that the leader of the DPRK, Kim Jong-un, did not take part in the missile tests.
On October 19, it was reported that the DPRK launched two unidentified projectiles in the Sea of Japan. The Japanese Coast Guard has issued an appropriate warning for ships. North Korea's launch of a ballistic missile also confirmed The Ministry of Defense of South Korea.
Earlier, North Korea showed a new hypersonic missile "Hwasong-8". According to experts, it bears an external resemblance to the DF-17, which is in service with the People's Liberation Army of China.
