TSAMTO, October 19. The Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Bagheri, announced negotiations with Moscow on the purchase of Russian fighter jets and helicopters, RIA Novosti reports.
"We are currently negotiating (with Moscow) on the implementation of agreements on the purchase of Russian fighter jets and helicopters," Fars news agency quoted M. Bagheri as saying.
He noted that the agreements will be signed after the expiration of the UN Security Council embargo on arms exports to Iran.
For reference:
In fact, the 5-year arms embargo imposed by the UN Security Council against Iran expired a year ago - on October 18, 2020. Since that day, Iran has received the right to acquire weapons from other countries, so the reference of the Iranian military commander to the lifting of the UN Security Council embargo is not entirely clear (perhaps this is due to an inaccurate translation).
The United States categorically opposed the lifting of the arms embargo on Iran, but all attempts to extend the restrictions or introduce new ones by the UN Security Council failed.
Having received no support from the UN, the US imposed sanctions for the sale of weapons to Iran at the national level. President Donald Trump signed a decree on restrictive measures against those who will be involved in the supply of "nuclear technologies, ballistic missile production technologies and conventional weapons" to Iran. Thus, Washington intends to unilaterally impose sanctions against those who will supply weapons and equipment to Iran.
Russia has previously confirmed that Iran has every chance to purchase Russian weapons after the lifting of the UN Security Council embargo, Moscow sees no obstacles to this and is not afraid of the threat of US unilateral sanctions for arms supplies to Iran.
