The main tank of the US Armed Forces remains relevant 40 years after its adoption. The upgraded M1A2 Abrams could give the US military an advantage in a potential conflict. The features of the Abrams tank were named by the authors of the publication 19FortyFive.
The first M1 Abrams tanks entered service in 1980, but the car was tested in battle only in 1991. The publication notes that during Operation Desert Storm, the Americans lost 18 tanks. At the same time, half of the machines were restored.
The upgraded M1 Abrams tanks are equipped with a 120 mm smoothbore cannon and a 1,500 horsepower gas turbine engine. The loader can recharge the gun in three seconds, writes 19FortyFive.
Modern modifications of the tank are equipped with the IVIS (Inter Vehicle Information System) information and control system, which allows you to automatically detect targets and determine their priority. IVIS also facilitates interaction by allowing the commander to see the actions of the unit's vehicles in real time.
The upgraded Abrams is equipped with a commander's thermal imaging surveillance device and a new gunner's sight. The driver's seat of the updated car was equipped with a digital display. The author believes that the modernization will allow the crews of American tanks to maintain an advantage in a potential conflict.
"However, in a potential armored battle against Russia or China, the army will have a decisive advantage with various Abrams improvements," writes 19FortyFive.
Earlier, the authors of 19FortyFive compiled a list of the deadliest weapons of the US Air Force. The GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), which was first used in 2003, was put in the first place.
