The Polish consortium Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) has signed an agreement for the development and supply of a short-range anti-aircraft missile system codenamed Narew. As reported by Breaking Defense, almost all of its components will be Polish, with the exception of interceptors and launchers. Poles will buy them from a foreign partner, whom they have not yet chosen.
Poland is currently armed [...] with Poprad anti-aircraft systems with Grom and Piorun missiles, which was developed by PGZ. They are capable of hitting aerial targets at a very short distance - about 6.5 kilometers. In addition, in 2018, the Poles signed an agreement with the United States on the acquisition of Patriot medium-range anti-aircraft systems that can detect targets at a range of up to 180 kilometers and fire at them at altitudes from 60 meters to 24 kilometers.
PGZ signed an agreement for the development and supply of 23 Narew short-range anti-aircraft missile systems during the International Defense Industry Exhibition in Kielce. Almost all of their components will be manufactured in Poland. Nevertheless, the Poles are going to purchase interceptor and launcher technologies from a foreign partner, with whom they have not yet decided. It is assumed that the range of Narew will be about 40 kilometers.
Narew will complement the Polish Wisla medium-range air defense system, the basis of which will be created by the American Patriot, and will also replace three aging systems - the Soviet KUB, OSA and NEVA air defense systems. First of all, the new complexes are designed to combat multi-purpose aircraft, cruise missiles and low-flying drones. The first shooting tests of Narew components are scheduled for 2026.
Poland intends not only to improve its air defense, but also to ensure security in other areas. Including in the digital space. Earlier we wrote that by 2024, cyber troops will appear in the country.
