A new association of the Navy - the Arctic Fleet - can be created in Russia to ensure the safety of the Northern Sea Route.
The creation of the Arctic association of the Navy will allow the Northern and Pacific Fleets to focus on solving combat tasks for their intended purpose.
"Now the issue of creating a new structure — the Arctic Fleet of Russia is being considered. This will be a separate association within the Navy, whose main task will be to ensure the security of the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic coast in the area of responsibility of the Northern and Pacific Fleets," a source in the naval sphere told TASS.
"It is assumed that the infrastructure for the functioning of the new association will be allocated from the Northern and Pacific Fleets. In the future, it will be replenished with ships and special equipment in the Arctic version," the agency interlocutor said.
